Raccoons
& Skunks
The
most common nuisance wildlife that seems to prevail
is the raccoon and skunk. Raccoons are nocturnal who
are active year-round. They prefer urban living. They
have a preference for forested areas, such as abandoned
homes of animals, such as woodpiles, decks and porches
located near water where it is plentiful. |
They
are extremely destructive to structures, causing a tremendous
amount of damage. The
skunk is also nocturnal, feeding on insects located in and
around lawn areas. They also seek habitat in woodpiles,
under decks and porches. They will roll up a lawn to feed
off insects and worms. When the is skunk is gone, it is
best to remove the food source or another skunk will replace
it. They cause a great deal of damage to porches, decks,
lawns and may also damage vegetable gardens. Diseases they
may carry are: Rabies, Distemper and Leptospirosis.
Squirrels
They
will usually nest in trees for food and protection from
predators and elements, Often times they will take up residence
in a structure for access to areas such as attic crawl spaces
and eaves if available. If you hear audible scratching,
gnawing, pattering sounds in the early morning or daytime
hours, it usually signals their presence. Torn insulation
dried leaves, cardboard may pinpoint their nests. Squirrels
in crawl spaces can damage electrical wiring and insulation.
